Learning Beyond the Classroom!

This week, our Grade 7 students took part in a hands-on learning experience as part of a multi-lesson program in partnership with the Okanagan and Similkameen Invasive Species Society (OASISS) and students from Oliver Elementary School. During these sessions, students explored the Max Lake restoration project and gained valuable experience in environmental stewardship.

During their fieldwork, students:

•  Assessed plant survival rates within restoration plots

•  Recorded any damage to plants and the project site

•  Monitored reinvasion by invasive species such as Canada Thistle and Purple loosestrife

•  Carefully removed invasive plants while protecting native plantings

•  Removed competing grasses growing near restoration plantings

Back in the classroom, students analyzed their data to determine plant survival percentages and help evaluate the success of restoration efforts across the site.
